1994 Federal Trade Commission Ruling states that funeral homes may no longer:
 
  • Charge any handling fees or refuse service to a family for purchasing the casket elsewhere.
  • Require the family to be present for the receipt of the casket.
  • Require the family to sign a waiver or disclaimer.
  • Withdraw an offered discount on services if a family decides to purchase the casket elsewhere.
  • Make slanderous remarks or comments concerning purchases made elsewhere.
Any of the above violations could result in the guilty party being fined up to $10,000 per incident.
